Confidence is gained through preparation.

0:04

Eight months out of the year, I'm

0:05

doing the same thing every day.

0:08

It's boring.

0:09

It's mundane, but it's what it takes.

0:12

[MUSIC PLAYING]

0:26

My mom has three brothers.

0:27

They all served in the military.

0:29

I think I knew from a pretty young age

0:31

that that's kind of what I wanted to do.

0:33

Baseball was a part of it, but it wasn't the biggest part.

0:37

Just seeing the people that were at Air Force, the caliber

0:41

of individual, it's like you can't go to a place like that

0:44

and not get better.

0:45

– He had the ability to fly in an F-15.

0:47

He went through basic cadet training.

0:50

We are going to push you at every turn.

0:53

It is a constant grinder that we are

0:55

going to eat you up and spit you out and just keep on going

0:57

and keep on going.

0:59

Just learning to be on all the time,

1:01

that's what that place grooms you to do.

1:04

It's pressure.

1:04

Pressure, pressure seven days a week, 24 hours a day,

1:07

365 days of the year, and I really

1:10

believe it set the foundation for him

1:12

to be where he's at today.

1:13

Swing and a miss, and the side is retired.

1:17

After his sophomore year, he ends up going to LSU,

1:20

and I think that proved to be a great spot for him,

1:24

and a big part of it was because of Coach Johnson.

1:28

When I got to LSU, the first day of workouts, I show up.

1:31

It's just me, and Wes is this big league pitching

1:35

coach who just tapped out of the big league season

1:37

during the year to come coach college.

1:41

And I show up and he's– all right.

1:43

You ready?

1:44

I'm like, yeah.

1:45

So I'm working my tail off through this warm-up.

1:48

I'm like, what are we doing?

1:51

This warm-up is two hours.

1:54

It definitely takes patience.

1:56

Then I go out to play catch and I'm, like, I feel amazing.

1:58

And then you do that over the course of a year.

2:00

There’s nobody that’s gonna stop us now.

2:03

[ANNOUNCER] It’s a very rare combination

2:04

of power and precision.

2:06

It's explosive stuff– swing and miss stuff.

2:09

It's the one thing that flipped the switch for me, and I'm like,

2:12

I'm going to listen to whatever this guy says

2:14

for the rest of my career.

2:18

Here at Pittsburgh, the warm-up is to get ready to throw.

2:21

Beginning of the off-season was about 2.5 hours every day.

2:24

I've seen some starters take 25 minutes to get ready to throw.

2:28

I've never seen anything like that.

2:29

It's the same thing every day.

2:31

It's very mundane.

2:31

It's very boring.

2:33

Boring is such a beautiful thing because that routine works.

2:39

I start with rolling out just soft tissue,

2:43

just to get blood moving.

2:44

Some breath work– just basically

2:46

getting present and staying present.

2:48

After that, I go up to the Stairmaster,

2:50

just get the blood flowing.

2:52

Go into some movement prep stuff,

2:54

basically just to activate hips, glutes, the obliques, core.

2:58

And then we do a mini circuit, sleds, pistol squats, band

3:01

walks.

3:02

Some hip rotations, and a back extension, and joint base

3:05

movements, and then the mobility stick.

3:08

The stabilization stuff.

3:10

Going into arm care, I do some forearm stuff, get

3:13

my shoulders going, and then I'll

3:14

throw med balls, then plyo balls.

3:18

The routine is not sexy.

3:20

It's boring.

3:20

You don't love it.

3:21

But at the end of the day, if you love the result,

3:23

you got to do it.

3:24

– Sometimes it's what it takes in sports–

3:27

the boring process, the boring fundamentals.

3:30

He has this sense of calm because of the fact

3:32

that he is prepared.

3:34

Confidence is gained through your routine, your process.

3:38

It's like a test, right?

3:39

You study for the test, you're going

3:41

to be confident going into it.

3:44

His routine is boring because it's the same every day,

3:48

but I'll 100% take boring all day long.

3:51

He's throwing 100, he doesn't even look like he's trying.

3:56

Brilliance on the field, for me, is patience.

3:58

Everything takes patience.

4:01

There's no instant gratification,

4:02

and a lot of the time it's boring.

4:05

But greatness is boring.

We hope you enjoyed the video and here is one of our endless bank jokes!

Q: Why don’t bank vaults ever gossip?

A: They’re great at keeping things locked up.
